In his essay Strangers from Different Shore, Ronald
Takaki uses rhetoric modes to explain why Asian America felt strangers in
America. The first rhetoric mode was narration.
Narration is how the writer tell the story of an event or experience. Takaki
uses his own experience when he was a child and narrate the diversity of their neighborhood.
He wrote “My teacher and textbooks did not explain the diversity of our
community or the sources of our unity.”
The second rhetoric mode Takaki uses was
comparison and contrast. Comparison and contrast is how the writer show the
similarities and differences between two objects. For example in his essay he compares
how many immigrants from Asia and European immigrants came to the United States.
And differ who Greeks stay on the United States while Asian return to their
hometown. He wrote “ 55 percent of the
Japanese who went to Hawaii between 1886 and 1924 returned to Japan.”
