Eight types of Paragraphs

In my English class I am learning about Eight Types of Paragraphs & Essays. The eight types of essays are narration, illustration, description, process analysis, classification, definition, comparison and contrast, and cause and effect. We are practice this types of rhetoric modes by reading this essay and writing about the different modes we found.
In his essay Strangers from  Different Shore, Ronald Takaki uses rhetoric modes to explain why Asian America felt strangers in America.  The first rhetoric mode was narration. Narration is how the writer tell the story of an event or experience. Takaki uses his own experience when he was a child and narrate the diversity of their neighborhood. He wrote “My teacher and textbooks did not explain the diversity of our community or the sources of our unity.”

The second rhetoric mode Takaki uses was comparison and contrast. Comparison and contrast is how the writer show the similarities and differences between two objects. For example in his essay he compares how many immigrants from Asia and European immigrants came to the United States. And differ who Greeks stay on the United States while Asian return to their hometown.  He wrote “ 55 percent of the Japanese who went to Hawaii between 1886 and 1924 returned to Japan.”

America is in the Heart

In my English class I am reading the book America is in the Heart. This book is about a Pilipino who works in the fields with his father to help support the family. Alllos is the main character of this book, he had a lot of brothers whom had left the family to war, school, work, or to America. He is the only boy who now helps his parent support his two little sisters. On part one of this book, we can see that he works very hard at a very young age, and moved town to town looking for better opportunities in order to save money for his parent to buy the lands they lost. And at the end of part one he is aboard to America.

In chapter 1, I learned something about the Filipino Culture. When a couple got married, they follow the couple to their new home, everyone shouting and throwing rice upon them. After that they stopped in the yard and if black smoke comes out of the house, this mean the bride was virgin. I think this ritual is very embarrassing for women.

Home sweet home

The dictionary definition for home; the place in which one's domestic affections are centered. For me it is where I learned to love, share, and take care of my family and others. My hometown is Tijuana, when I was 12 we moved to Spring Valley and I don’t felt out of place because my family was with me. Even though I miss my home where I grew up, it doesn't matter because I have my family with me. For me home is where I feel comfortable when the people around me. Home is in my heart, no matter how close or far I am.  Home is more than a place to decoder with furniture, wall colors and fancy stuffs. Home is a beautiful place to be.

Beautiful Boy

Happy Friday!!
Yesterday February 2nd was the first anniversary of the death of a very important man in my life, my uncle Polo. This made me think deeper about the essay I have to write in my English class. I have to choose three songs with the same topic but different main ideas. My topic is been a parent, this is what made me think, my uncle left behind his 2 daughters and his son. Being a parent is the best give someone ever receive Like John Lennon said in his song “Beautiful Boy,” he will be always with is son no matter what. A question came to my mind now, what happen after you die, how will take care of your child. I guess love, memories and education is what parents left after they gone.
Ps. Dont worry Tio Polo we will always have your memories and we will take care of your two girls and your boy NO MATTER WHAT......

My World

By reading Thandie Newton's speech about embracing others I feel connected to her because before having my baby i felt out if place. I remember that I used to think that been in my room was the best place to be me. But when I started to change the pink walls for green, taking out my concert poster and put animals frames instead, that's when I realized that my real life was coming. When I first hug my son I discovered that he is my world and I am part of him, he is the one who give my stregth every day. <3
I know that I will never feel out of place anymore.
